The Koalas is a wildlife road movie travelling across the eastern states of Australia. The koala is now listed as endangered in NSW and QLD and faces complex issues in Victoria and South Australia, so there is an urgent need for a film exposing the parlous state of wild animal welfare in this country. Through a number of koala stories, we explore societal attitudes about land use in Australia as the koala in the wild is increasingly threatened by the growing destruction of habitat from urban expansion, mining operations and industrial development, combined with the massive destruction from Climate Change induced fires and floods. We introduce urban planners, designers and economists, as well as scientists, animal rescuers and carers to reveal that we need to do things differently to protect native species. Koala stories are popular in the media but there is little detail about why the koala is under such threat. Our story will show the causes and propose solutions.
